ARTE: On-The-Spot Art Competition on Philippine Culture
As part of ARTE 2014 visual art program, the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. (PCFI) is organizing the first-ever “On-The-Spot Art Competition” on Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Philippine Cultural Enrichment Complex (aka PhilFest Grounds) at 14301 Nine Eagles Drive in Tampa, Florida to recognize and encourage artistic talents from the community at large and also promote the beautiful cultures of the Philippines and develop camaraderie among all talented artists in the Tampa Bay Area.
The Grand Prize Winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and selected entries from the participants will be presented at the cultural exhibit at the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center during PhilFest 2014 from April 4 to 6.
The public, friends and families are welcome to attend free of charge.
Who May Participate
This competition is open to all artist of any age, nationality and skill level and would like to especially encourage high school and college level students to participate.
Competition Theme: Philippine Culture
To inspire the artists, a short cultural performance will be presented before the competition starts after which the dancers, musicians and other models will be positioned in different areas of the competition venue. The artists will then choose the subjects(s) they want to render. Artists may concentrate on any aspect of the models: costumes, faces, individual or as a group, or self-expression based on the presentation prior to the competition. There will be no limit on the number of art works provided he/she finishes by 4:00PM of the same day.
Medium
Medium to be used can be any of or combination of the following: crayons, watercolor, oil, acrylic, pen or pencils. Minimum canvas/board size for the art work is 20″x30″. All materials, including canvasses, easels small tables and other equipment must be provided by the contestants. We can only provide folding chairs.
Competition Schedule
08:00 AM – 09:00 AM
Registration and briefing of participants. Coffee and Donuts will be served to all participants.
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM
Cultural presentation by PPAC, Musikong Kawayan Bamboo Ensemble, Philippine Choral Group and others
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
On-the-spot painting sessions
4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Judging and selection of winners and PhilFest Exhibit entries
All art work must be done on the spot and must be finished exactly at 4 PM.
Exhibit and Competition Results
Selected entries will be chosen by the judges and will be on exhibit at the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center during PhilFest 2014 from April 4 to 6. The visiting public will be able to vote for a “Crowd Favorite” during the 3-day exhibit. The winners will be announced and awarded on Sunday, April 6th during PhilFest.
Criteria
Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:
Composition (30%)
Technique (40%)
Use of Theme (30%)
Total: 100%.
All entries will be judged by a panel of judges composed of artists and experts on Philippine art and culture. “Crowd Favorite” will be based on votes from visitors at the exhibit. Decision of the judges are final.
Prizes
The grand prize winner of the “On The Spot Art Competition” will receive US$500 and the “Crowd Favorite” out of the selected entries to be exhibited will received US$300. If the grand prize winner and crowd favorite will be the same person, then he wins it all. Winning entries will automatically become properties of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc.
Registration
All interested participants must pre-register online by filling out the online registration form before Friday, February 28, 2014 at 5PM. Pre-registered participants will be required to register at the competition venue from 8AM to 9AM on the competition day. There will be a $10 Registration Fee.
Competition proper will start at 10AM and end at 4PM.
