Estillo Filipino 2023
The Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. presents “Estillo Filipino 2023”, a Philippine Fashion Show featuring the collection of Edgar San Diego and Richard Papa, on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 2:00 PM.
After a long absence due to the recent pandemic, Filipino designers Richard Papa and Edgar San Diego are returning to Tampa to showcase their new collection entitled “Estillo Filipino 2023” for the restoration of the PCFI’s Barangay Pavilion.
One of the many collections to be featured is Edgar San Diego’s “Ipininta, Inimprenta at Ipinorma,” This is a product of modern technology where two sets of collages of San Diego’s painting. One is a collection of works with Flower subjects printed on white. The scattered half-tone flowers on the background were picked up from the different paintings. The second is a collection of paintings with yellow ocher backgrounds ( mostly sunset scenes), which are printed on beige just with a striped background. It was digitally printed on “jusi” in a process called Sublimation.
During his UST days, San Diego worked part-time as a hand painter of evening gowns for established fashion designers. This honed his skills with using acrylic paints which have been his favorite medium until now. After college, he opened his couture shop and had a fruitful fashion career for over 40 years. He served at the Fashion Designers Association of the Philippines president for four terms. He represented the country in fashion events in Asia, the USA, Australia, and London, earning him several awards and citations.
When the Pandemic came, the fashion industry stood still, and it became the turning point of his career. This was when he decided to downplay fashion and take painting on canvas seriously. His love for Filipino costume and culture is evident in his paintings with the influences of artists like Diego Rivera, Tamara de Lempicka, and our very own Fernando Amorsolo.
Aside from a handful of group exhibits with his batchmates in UST, San Diego mounted his solo Art exhibit last October 2021, entitled “Baro’t Saya, Tuwa at Ligaya “at the Mega Fashion Hall of SM Megamall in Manila.
