Kris Lawrence at PhilFest 2013
The Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc., with the support of GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Live TV, is proud to present Kris Lawrence in a special show at PhilFest 2013 on Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 2:30PM at the Sinagtala Stage of the Philippine Cultural Enrichment Complex in Tampa, Florida.
Kris Lawrence bagged the ‘Best R&B’ and the ‘Best Performance by a Male Recording Artist’ (Music Uplate Live Texters’ Choice Awards) in the recently-concluded 23rd Awit Awards, held last September 30, 2011 at the SM Mall of Asia. His ‘Moments of Love’ album (MCA Music) garnered the ‘Best R&B’ citation, while his second single from the same album, ‘Just Tell Me You Love Me,’ earned him the latter award. “It’s my first major award, would you believe?,” says the Star in a Million Season 2 Grand Winner. “And it makes me feel like I’m finally doing something right.”
But instead of resting on his laurels, Kris is bent on raising the bar in terms of musical creativity. “It’s sad that people think Filipinos are just a bunch of copycats,” he laments. “We want to put the Philippines back on the map, and so far, Charice is doing a great job on her own.”
Recently, Kris teamed up with soul brothers Jay-R and Billy Crawford to form Three Stars, an independent record label that affords them the freedom to stretch out musically. “Our first project will be for Elmo Magalona. The three of us sing the hook, and Elmo raps all over it. We’re calling it ‘Three Stars and a Son,’ he shares, alluding to patriotic, flag-based references.
With the tremendous airplay and mileage generated by ‘I Will Take You Forever,’ the Christopher Cross remake he did with Denise Laurel, Kris generously shares the accolades. “Many people know her as a fine actress, but Denise is really a great singer with outstanding technique. From that duet alone, I’ve had friends confessing that they never thought she could sing that well, but she actually outdid herself on that one.”
Not surprisingly, the song actually garnered an Awit Awards nomination in the Best Collaboration category as well. “That’s just the tip of the iceberg,” Kris intones. “We’ve actually cut more songs in the studio, and we’re cooking up an even bigger surprise.”
PhilFest will be celebrated from Friday to Sunday, April 5 to 7, 2013 and will be expecting an audience of not less than 12,000 in a span of three days. Entrance to the festival are $6.00 at the gate and $5.00 at select outlet stores for advance tickets, children 5 and under, free.
